20 Must Have Mid-Century Modern Home Decor Items at Ikea

My favorite home decor style is a mix of mid-century modern furniture with eclectic wall art and accents. One of the best places to find new pieces when on a budget is Ikea. When we first bought our house, we spent many Sundays perusing the display rooms in Ikea to get some inspiration and fill our home.

When it comes to mid-century modern decor, I love to find pieces at thrift stores, however, Ikea is a good cost-effective alternative when you can’t quite find the piece you you want for your space.

Below is a list of 20 mid-century modern IKEA home decor items to incorporate into your home:

1. MALM 4 Drawer Dresser

Ikea Malm Dresser
This dresser is a blank canvas. It could easily be upgraded by adding hairpin legs, or sleek gold handles to add to it’s mid-century modern feel.

2. MATHOPEN Headboard

Ikea Mathopen Headboard
This simple wooden headboard is a great addition to a mid-century modern bedroom. Mixing this with gold and colorful accents as well as some plants would make an incredibly cozy space.

3. HOLJES Pendant lamp

This pendant light would be perfect in a bathroom, hallway or over a breakfast nook. I love the shape of the light, and its color. The only thing I wish is that the metal finish came in a gold tone style.

4. RODD table lamp base

I love this brass table lamp base. Adding a shade with a fun print, bright color, or simply white would look great in a mid-century modern bedroom or living room.

5. JAKOBSBYN Pendant light shade

This glass pendant light shade would be the perfect addition to a gold or black pendant light. I love its light brown tint, which could add a great ambiance to a dining room or kitchen.

6. SANELA & VENDLA Throw Pillow Covers

Sanela & Vendla Throw Pillows

I’ve been obsessed with velvet green accents lately. I find the texture so fun, but haven’t been brave enough to add it to my decor in a big way, through curtains for example. I have these green accent pillows on my couch paired with a different black and white pillow cover from Ikea with a pop of orange and I think they compliment each other so well. This black and white throw pillow would also fit well in a mid-century modern living room or bedroom.

7. STENLILLE & KRONGE Rugs

Ikea Stenlille & Kronge rugs
I tend to lean more toward funky antique rugs in my home. However, these mid-century modern inspired Ikea rugs I love. The black and white rug would compliment a bright space really well. I also love the colors in the geometric rug. It would be perfect for a bedroom or kids room.

8. STRANDRAG, MURRATA & NORDIS Curtains

ikea Nordis Curtain
We have these light and airy curtains in our dining room and they do wonders at drawing the small space out. The cut out design can be found in all three Ikea curtains I’ve linked in the title. I like how these types of curtains can give you texture in your space without committing to a really bold pattern.

9. STOCKHOLM Mirror

Ikea Stockholm Mirror
A good circle mirror is a must in a mid-century modern space. This Ikea mirror would be the perfect addition to an entryway, over a fireplace or as a focal point in your dining room.

10. SATSUMAS Plant Stand

Ikea Satsumas Plant Stand
Especially when growing indoor plants, owning a funky plant stand is a great way to get the plants off the floor and into sunlight. I like this minimalistic plant stand. I think it would be a great addition to a corner of a room that gets a ton of sunlight. It’s also only $30, so you could paint out the wood or the stand pieces with a pop of color that matches your space perfectly, or makes a bold statement.

11. GULDBODA Gold Frames

Ikea Guldoba Gold Frame
I am a sucker for a gold accent. I constantly find myself purchasing gold frames and trinkets for my built-ins, and throughout my home in general. This frame, at only $4.99, is the perfect additional to a mid-century modern room.

12. LISABO Table

Ikea Lisabo Table
This sleek table is essentially a blank slate for your mid-century modern dining room. It would be perfect to dress up with some bold antique chairs. I could also see it used as a desk in an office with a bold wall color or rug.

13. STOCKHOLM Sideboard

Ikea Stockholm Sideboard
I am always on the hunt for a mid-century modern credenza to anchor the space in our retro room at the back of our house. However, purchasing a real antique beauty is quite the investment. I typically see them range from $900 to $1,500 for the size I like. This one from ikea is $449, so by comparison a bargain, and can give you a ton of added space in a dining room or extra space in the kitchen.

14. FANBYN Barstools

Ikea Fanbyn Stools
I love these Ikea bar stools. They are perfect for a modern island in a mid-century modern kitchen. I like the simple bucket seat, and straight mid-century modern legs.

15. KARLSTAD Sofa Series

Ikea Karlstad Sofa Series
We have a this exact couch, only the “L” shape version in our living room. It’s extremely durable and the grey weave texture adds a retro flare to our mid-century modern inspired living room. I also love how you can evolve your Ikea couch over time by making it an “L” shape, or adding a chase lounge.

16. STOCKHOLM Coffee Table & Nesting tables

Ikea Stockholm Coffee Table Ikea Stockholm Nesting Tables
This coffee table and mid-century modern nesting tables are both a great shape, and could serve a ton of different purposes. First, they could be used traditionally in a mid-century modern living room. Or they could be used under a window, or in another space with low-sitting furniture, like a sun room.

17. LOVBACKEN Side Table

Ikea Lovbacken Side Table
This mid-century modern side table is a much taller option than the nesting tables listed above. It would be a good option for a side table next to a higher sitting chair or couch with a lamp.

18. STRANDMOM Chair & Ottoman

Ikea Strandmom Chair Ikea strandmom ottoman
We purchased this cute mid-century modern inspired teal chair and ottoman for our living room and absolutely love it. Not only is the color super fun, its actually really comfortable. It comes in a variety of different colors and prints – I just noticed they added an emerald green velvet texture one to the options, which would be so pretty as the focal point of a mid-century modern living room.

19. STOCKHOLM Rattan Chair

Ikea Stockholm Rattan Chair
I have grown a recent appreciation for rattan furniture. I like how its natural look can bring warmth and texture to a mid-century modern space. This chair would look so cute next to a plant stand, or hanging planter in the extra space in a dining room or living room.

20. Plants

A final and really important piece to a mid-century modern home are plants. I purchased my sanseveria at Ikea, and it’s been extremely easy to maintain. Whether you want real or fake plants throughout your home, bringing in a natural element can add a ton of dimension to your space. Here are a few plants you can buy at Ikea to spruce up your space:

Overall, when you can’t afford or find the real deal, Ikea can be a great and affordable option for decorating your mid-century modern home. All of these pieces would work well in a ton of different spaces in your home. Which one of these mid-century modern Ikea pieces are your favorite?
